South Dakota

What you need to know before you go

The U.S. state of South Dakota is famed for its vast, rolling prairies and the dramatic and thick canopies of the Black Hills National Forest. Within the Black Hills, visitors will find 2 famous and stunning national monuments carved right into the vast granite cliffsides. The first is Mount Rushmore, featuring the iconic and massive busts of 4 important and revered U.S. presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The second is the Crazy Horse Memorial, a monument to an iconic Native American tribal chief that is still in progress. Other attractions in the Black Hills National Forest include Spearfish Canyon and the Cathedral Spires.

At Jewel Cave National Monument, budding potholers can traverse hundreds of miles of underground trails filled with stark landscapes, stalactites and stalagmites, with guided tours available. The Wall Drug Store is a traditional pharmacy and general store with an authentic soda fountain. The unusual attraction at The World’s Only Corn Palace offers Moorish-style architecture and fantastic murals.
