New York Hall of Science

The New York Hall of Science has 400 hands-on exhibits that focus on biology, chemistry, and physics and is New York City’s only hands-on science and technology centre. Originally created to be part of the 1964-65 World’s Fair, the museum still has much the same vision, just on a larger scale. Since then, the museum has been expanded and updated, now welcoming over 500,000 visitors a year.

The museum’s purpose is to promote passionate learners, critical thinkers, and active citizens in the younger generations so that they can nurture that into adulthood. They do this through a design, make, and play method, which allows kids a chance to see science in a fun way and find their passion. For college science majors, the museum offers a study and training programme with Queens College.

Highlights of the New York Hall of Science

The museum features many educational exhibits with a permanent collection and travelling exhibitions. The kids can experience many unique exhibits that include the Realm of the Atom, Rocket Park, and Hidden Kingdoms: The World of Microbes. In these exhibits, children will experience scientific concepts in an approachable manner that fosters comprehension and retention, with the hopes of inspiring a love of science and learning.

Every day throughout the museum there are different Daily Science Demonstrations to highlight scientific concepts. On your visit, you may see a dissection of a cow’s eye to explore the complexity of how eyes work, or a demonstration that showcases the buoyancy of a hot-air balloon to explain how it can achieve flight. The Daily Science Demonstrations are always changing, so check the website for dates and times for specific events.

History of the New York Hall of Science

Established as part of the 1964 World’s Fair, the Hall of Science continues to occupy one of the remaining structures from the fair. While most exhibits closed immediately after the 1964 World’s Fair, the New York Hall of Science remained open for 15 years.

In light of new renovations, the New York Hall of Science closed from 1979 to 1986. After re-opening, the New York Hall of Science continued to receive renovations and expansions. Today, the museum is better than ever before.

The museum offers an education programme for science majors who can study under a tuition waiver programme at Queens College in exchange for committing at least 2 years in city schools.

One of the best attractions near the New York Hall of Science is the Queens Zoo. The zoo is a wonderful experience for all ages. It houses more than 75 species from the Americas, including Andean bears, pumas, parrots, bison, cranes, and seals. The zoo also has a farm with an array of domestic animals for petting and feeding. Make sure to check out the walk-through aviary that houses incredible bird species that you can experience up close.
