Deering Estate

Deering Estate is a historical site and museum that was the former estate of Charles Deering, a local philanthropist, preservationist, and environmentalist. You can explore this museum to learn more about the man as well as preservation efforts from the early 20th century.

Everyone can find fun at this museum, including children who may not care much about the history, as the grounds and dock are visually stunning. Most people spend about an hour or so in the museum, with some extra time reserved for the outside area lasting another hour or so on average.

Deering Estate highlights

One of the most appealing aspects of Deering Estate is the opportunity for hiking. You'll find several trails throughout the area that will take you through preserved natural features on top of the Miami Rock Ridge. Bird-watching is especially popular on the trails, as more than 170 migrant and resident species are found here.

In addition to being committed to the preservation of nature, Deering Estate is also a patron of the arts. You'll find rotating exhibits here showing off impressive local artists. Additionally, live performances are often held here, including the One-Minute Play Festival.

Good to know when visiting Deering Estate

Before you visit Deering Estate, there are a few aspects to keep in mind. You'll find opportunities for tours of the museum and the nature preserve, but they typically operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Of course, you're welcome to embark on a self-guided tour anytime during open hours.

You'll find this destination several miles southwest of Miami's city centre area, and it'll put you close to quite a few other exciting attractions as well. If you want more natural splendour, you can head north to Pinecrest Gardens and the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, both of which are around 2 miles away.
