Fonthill Castle allows you to see a historic landmark that's also a highly unusual site in the United States: a genuine castle modelled on a European one from medieval times. This lovely mansion offers balconies, turrets, and vast great halls. Most astoundingly, it was built by Henry Chapman Mercer without any blueprints. It's modelled on a Rhenish castle from the 13th century and features Gothic doorways, mysterious dead-end hallways, stairways that appear out of nowhere, and 44 rooms, each unique from every other.
This castle was Mercer's fairy tale dream home, and that fairy tale nature extends to every visitor to the place. It's a little over an hour north of Philadelphia.
