To reach Ship Island, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and situated 12 miles (19 km) off the coast, you’ll need to take a boat. However, the journey is well worth it, as you’ll be rewarded with a tranquil day on a serene island, far from the bustling tourist crowds.
Ship Island offers pristine beaches, clear waters and untouched nature to enjoy. The swimming beach on the south side of the island is great for wading, snorkelling and beachcombing. There’s also ample wildlife to view and historic Fort Massachusetts to visit. Take an hour-long ferry or private charter to get there from Gulfport or Biloxi.

Horn Island is ideally suited for nature lovers who want to discover unspoilt beaches and rich ecosystems. Part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore nature preserve, this undeveloped island is 10 miles (16 km) off the coast and only accessible by private boat.
Popular with backcountry campers, the island is a great base for birdwatching and kayaking. The island wilderness was a constant source of inspiration to celebrated local artist Walter Inglis Anderson, who is reported to have rowed his tiny wooden skiff there more than 100 times. Check out the gallery of his work in Ocean Springs while you’re in the area.

A quaint, artsy beach town with a peaceful vibe, Bay St Louis combines traditional Southern charm and hospitality with history and art to create a memorable holiday destination. It’s no surprise it was once dubbed ‘one of the coolest small towns in America’ and ranked in the top 10 of small beach towns. Try beach combing the soft sands or follow the promenade trail.
Accommodation options here vary from waterfront cottages, cute B&Bs and boutique inns to traditional resorts. In the tree-lined streets of historic Old Town, you can find one-of-a-kind shops, boutiques and art galleries as well as chic restaurants where coastal cuisine is a speciality. Afterwards, take a stroll along the scenic harbour to watch the sun set.

The charming small-town Ocean Springs has two beaches for visitors to enjoy, with each offering a very different experience. At Front Beach, just a short distance from the town centre and near Fort Maurepas Park, you’ll find a relaxing atmosphere among its white sand and fire pits. It’s a popular area for volleyball, kayaking and family picnics with impressive sunset views across Biloxi Bay.
Quieter East Beach, located on a tranquil, scenic shoreline, has less commercial development, but you’ll still find useful amenities like parking and toilets. It’s great for walking, birdwatching and photography, and is close to Davis Bayou Campground for overnight stays. Dogs on leads are welcome at the pet-friendly zones, so do bring your furry friends, too.

If you’re looking for a laidback, coastal escape, then look no further than Long Beach. Nicknamed ‘The Friendly City’, it offers visitors wide, sandy beaches and fewer crowds than Biloxi or Gulfport, but retains all the Southern hospitality you could wish for.
As well as typical seaside activities like beach games, swimming and shell collecting, the city’s public waterfront is perfect for a stroll, and its central area and streets are bicycle-friendly. At the nearby University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Park Campus, visit the Friendship Oak, a tree that is more than 500 years old and is rumoured to bring visitors good fortune.

Talents as diverse as writer William Faulkner and musician Jimmy Buffett are both said to have been inspired by the views out into the Mississippi Sound from Pascagoula Beach. It’s not difficult to see why.
As well as picture-postcard panoramas, there’s a 14-acre (5.6-hectare) park with concessions, playgrounds, pavilions and barbecue grills, as well as a splash pad, hiking route, birdwatching trails and a large pier. Explore the 2-mile (3.2-km) promenade that begins at Oliver Street and stretches along the coastline to the Point Park boat launch, perfect for dog walkers and cyclists.

A wilderness island excellent for exploration, but leave no trace

The secluded Cat Island is only accessible by boat and is the epitome of a deserted island getaway. It offers an untamed and challenging landscape of rugged sandy beaches, dense forest and zero amenities whatsoever. There’s no drinking water or shelter available, so you’ll need to bring everything you need with you, and pets and glass bottles are forbidden. It’s a fantastic getaway if you’re seeking a digital detox.
What visitors will find is an unspoilt island offering ample opportunities for sunbathing, hiking, beachcombing and camping. Don’t go looking for any cats though: when French explorers named the island, they mistook its resident raccoon population for feral kitties.
