In the Eden Valley in Cumbria sits Penrith, a town famed as the home of Penrith Castle, a 14th-century edifice that stands on a lush grassy meadow. Also in this town, you’ll find the Penrith Museum, which showcases archaeological finds from the region, including Roman-era pottery. Beacon Hill on the town’s northern end features a monument showcasing stunning panoramic views of the town. Just south of town, visitors will find Brougham Castle, which dates to the Norman era, and Mayburgh Henge, a prehistoric standing stone monument.

Kids will be thrilled at the chance to go horseriding at Happy Hooves Riding Centre. An enjoyable, serene walk awaits at Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens, which also hosts an annual marmalade festival. Whinfell Forest features a quaint holiday village to explore. Other ancient wonders here include the neolithic era henge of King Arthur’s Round Table and the standing stone circle of Long Meg and Her Daughters, which dates to circa 1500 BCE.
