Blackpool Beach, located on the Irish Sea, is a holiday hotspot that has something for everyone. It has been one of England’s top destinations for getting out to the sea and surf since ‘taking the cure’ of sea bathing and fresh air became fashionable in the 1700s.

The area continued to grow as it became easier to access through the establishment of transport and lodging. After World War I, Blackpool Beach grew exponentially in popularity and now serves not only as a great holiday destination but as a good hub for exploring the whole Lancashire region of Northwest England.

 Highlights of Blackpool Beach

Blackpool Beach is so named purportedly because of a drainage channel that ran over a peat bog and discoloured the water that ran into the Irish Sea. With nearly 7 miles of golden sandy beaches, complete with lifeguards keeping watch, the beach alone is a draw for both holidaymakers from the UK and around the world.

In addition to the beach, the area boasts 3 different piers with various entertainment options, as well as Blackpool Pleasure Beach, an amusement park featuring one of Europe’s most renowned rollercoasters. Blackpool Beach truly has all of the trappings and kitsch of a typical British seaside resort from days of yore.

Good to know about Blackpool Beach

Blackpool Beach has trams that run the entire length of the beach, making exploring the area fairly straightforward and easy. The Blackpool Tower right off the beach offers a glimpse into times gone by with a circus and an Edwardian tea room.

The area offers opportunities for fun and adventure off the sand as well. The Blackpool Winter Gardens area is a sight to behold, and the Sandcastle Water Park is an indoor facility offering a day of adventure for the whole family. Don’t forget about the Blackpool illuminations, when the town lights up with more than a half-million light bulbs from September to November.
