Aqua Viva is absolutely gorgeous; if you're a design/architecture buff, you'll love it. Unfortunately in terms of standard hotel amenities it falls a little short. If you're just looking for a place to crash and maybe meet other young travelers, it's probably great, but we found that the service was below expectations for the price. The staff is very nice, but our room wasn't cleaned once, the shared bathroom was pretty filthy, and there was an evening we waited 2 hours before we found someone who worked there to get fresh towels. It was also quite noisy as staff were up late playing music in the common area. The suites are really stunning and comfortable, very spacious with a/c and a large bathroom/shower, but note that the "double room" is not a double room-- it's 2 twin bunks with little space for luggage and is quite hot and uncomfortable. The location is close to the town of Tulum so not inconvenient, though it's definitely in a very poor residential area. It's about a 100 peso taxi ride or an hour's walk to the beach. The pool and bonfire area are lovely and there are hammocks for lounging, plus an outdoor TV with Apple TV that was nice to be able to use. Most taxi drivers don't know the hotel and it has no sign-- use Don Diego de la Selva as a landmark and look for the high white walls and wooden gate.
