Seine-Maritime

What you need to know before you go

Seine-Maritime is an area in Normandy along France’s northern coast at the mouth of the Seine river that’s home to major cities and museums, history, shopping and cultural experiences. Le Havre and Rouen, two historic cities, are located here. A visit to St Joan of Arc’s Church showcases a monument to the martyred saint. Abbaye de Jumièges offers cultural and artistic displays in the ruins of an ancient abbey. The Church of Saint-Maclou and Saint-Ouen Abbey both offer the jagged spires of Gothic architecture, and the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen served as the subject of a famous Monet painting.

Museums abound here as well, including the Rouen Museum of Fine Arts, which showcases major paintings in a 19th-century building. At the Museum of Modern Art André Malraux, you’ll see a broad collection of major Impressionist paintings. In the heart of Rouen, Le Gros-Horloge is a still-functioning wrought-iron astronomical clock dating to the 14th century.
