The Normandy American Cemetery was the first American cemetery of the Second World War established on European soil. Overlooking Omaha Beach, one of the primary D-Day landing points, the site receives more than a million visitors annually. It serves as the final resting place for more than 9,000 U.S. soldiers and memorialises another 1,500 who were never recovered.
The grounds encompass the soldiers’ graves, a quiet chapel and a memorial colonnade centred around a bronze statue embodying the spirit of freedom. Over each soldier’s grave is a white Latin cross or Star of David inscribed with his name and rank. The site’s visitor centre offers insight into the lives of some of these soldiers and others who survived.

Site of the ingenious harbour that helped to conclude the war

The seaside town of Arromanches-les-Bains never fully left the 1940s. Visitors may spot old military jeeps and hear the upbeat rhythm of big band music as they wander its streets. While the town is located at the geographical centre of the D-Day beaches, it was not itself a battleground.
Arromanches-les-Bains is known for the temporary harbour that was built here to facilitate the unloading of military vehicles, supplies and soldiers onto the mainland. Mulberry Harbour, or Port Wilson, was critical to the war effort, and a remnant still stands on the beach today. Visit the town’s Musée du Débarquement to learn about the construction and operation of the harbour as well as the phases of the Allied landing operation.

German defences that have stood the test of time

The artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer is a well-preserved remnant of the German army’s Atlantic Wall. Situated between the Omaha and Gold landing beaches, the battery was a key target for Allied forces during the D-Day landings. The area was heavily bombed by the French and Americans, and German forces manning the battery surrendered not long after the landings.
An official historic monument, the defence battery is largely intact, although its massive naval guns are rusting from years resting in their concrete casemates. Go inside the bunkers and have a look out at the Normandy coast the way the Germans saw it on D-Day.

The beach that saw D-Day’s most devastating combat
Categorías: Historia, Asequible, Fotos
Of the 5 D-Day landing beaches, Omaha is the most famous for its dramatic turn of events and heavy casualties. 34,000 U.S. troops stormed the beach on the morning of 6th June and were faced with rugged terrain, heavily fortified German defences and hordes of mines hidden in the sand and water. Despite these challenges and other setbacks, the assault was successful, with the Germans giving way by midday. It came at a cost, and the beach became known as ‘Bloody Omaha’.
The Les Braves sculpture, a silver modernist piece mounted in the sand, commemorates the soldiers who fought and died here. In the hills behind the beach, 9,000 U.S. soldiers are laid to rest in the Normandy American Cemetery.

Saluting a heroic spot

Just west of Omaha Beach, the Pointe du Hoc Ranger Monument stands on a 100-ft (30-metre) cliff. It commemorates the site of one of the most heroic efforts of the D-Day landings. German troops had fortified the clifftop with artillery that might have decimated the Allied forces landing at beaches Omaha and Utah. In the early hours of the morning, U.S. Army Rangers managed to scale the cliffs and seize the artillery even while under heavy gunfire.
Seeing the cliffs for yourself, it seems almost an impossible feat. Visitors to the site will also see German bunkers, bomb craters from Allied attacks and the Ranger Monument, a granite spear that stands at the cliff’s edge.

The Utah Beach Landing Museum tells the story of the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy. Through a series of 10 exhibits, visitors learn about the preparation and execution of the largest amphibious operation in history. It’s located in Satine-Marie-du-Mont, steps from the beach where 23,000 American soldiers landed on that decisive June morning.
The museum’s extensive collection of military uniforms, gear and vehicles includes rare treasures like an authentic B26 bomber and a Higgins boat landing craft. There’s a highly personal touch to the exhibits, which emphasise soldiers’ stories through photographs, letters and oral histories.

Immersive experience in a German bunker
Categorías: Historia, Poco común
Two kilometres inland from Sword Beach, the Merville Gun Battery posed a significant threat to Allied forces landing on the coast. It consisted of 4 heavily fortified bunkers manned by 200 German soldiers. In a daring pre-dawn assault, British paratroopers managed to capture the battery and disable its artillery, although not without heavy casualties.
Today, the battery is preserved as a museum and memorial to the British troops who participated in the assault. The museum’s Douglass C-47, an aircraft extensively used by the Allies for troop transport, is in excellent condition and open for visitor exploration. Explore the bunkers and experience an immersive sound and light show that simulates the D-Day assault.

An interactive museum that expertly sets the scene

The Airborne Museum commemorates the American and British Airborne Divisions and details their D-Day operations. This is certainly one of Normandy’s most impressive museums. Comprehensive and thoughtfully arranged, it incorporates creatively conceived interactive elements that make it enjoyable for adults and children alike.
The museum is located in the town of Sainte-Mère-Église where paratroopers were dropped behind enemy lines in the earliest hours of D-Day. Exhibits make use of impressive large-scale dioramas that stage soldiers in realistic scenes with tanks and equipment. Military aircraft, gliders, weapons and uniforms are on display. A highlight: you can attend the briefing and gear up together with the paratroopers before their big jump.

Showcasing the Canadian contribution to the war effort
Categorías: Historia, Fotos
Of the 5 D-Day beach landing operations, the assault on Juno Beach was assigned to the Canadians. As such, the Juno Beach Centre pays homage to the contributions made by Canada’s military and also contextualises the war from the oft-overlooked Canadian perspective.
Exhibits detail how Canada became involved in the war and delve into the values and culture that led so many Canadian citizens to enlist: most who served in the Second World War were volunteers. Take a stroll along the beach, just in front of the museum, and see past memorials and the remains of German defences.

Gravesite for thousands of German soldiers
Categorías: Historia, Grupos, Familias
The German War Cemetery at La Cambe is the resting place for more than 21,000 fallen German soldiers, most of whom died between 6th June and 20th August, 1944. Originally an American battlefield cemetery, both Germans and Americans were buried here until the American soldiers were moved to the Normandy American Cemetery or returned to the United States.
In contrast to the Allied cemeteries, the German cemeteries tend to be simpler and more sombre, with graves marked in groups by dark stone crosses. Adjacent to the cemetery, a Peace Garden was planted with more than a thousand trees in tribute to the lives lost in the tragedy of war.
