It began as a collection of exhibitions across the city, with the permanent location designed in 1986 and formally opened in 1995. The museum's permanent collection encompasses about 5,000 works, having grown by 5 times its initial offerings.
The museum covers more than 21,500 square feet of exhibit space in a historic cluster of buildings in Plaça dels Angels square. It draws over 330,000 visitors every year.
