It is a nice old fashioned hotel on University Avenue about a third of a mike from campus. They run a nice Chinese Restaurant

The room was clean enough except there was a weird open window in the bathroom that you couldn't close because the tub/shower insert half covered it. There were rat droppings on the sill of that window. There was no effective air conditioning in the room though the hallway seemed cool enough. We were there for a very hot weekend so the window had to be open and the street noise was significant. The beds were ok and the location is good for dining etc. but it needs an upgrade to be truly pleasant. We were lucky enough to get a street parking spot right out front so that was positive.

The hotel is dirty and smells like cigarette smoke. In addition, some rooms don't have bathrooms and I was woken up at 2:30AM by someone blasting the radio while showering. The staff is non-existent. This is the last time the hotels sees me.

Efficient and very clean room w/ private bath. We had a good experience at the hotel. The location is perfect. Would definitely stay there again. I used a parking SpotHero app online which found a nearby lot for overnight was $18. Reasonable.

102 years old, full of character. If you like time travel you will love this. Very nice and helpful proprietor. Good air flow. Lots of great eating easily walkable.

Close to Berkeley campus, this is an older building with layers of paint. The lobby is a bit old fashioned and the room was clean with clean beds and bathroom. Limited amenities and a fridge in the room.

No short term parking at entrance, but people seem to double park with impunity. Ring the bell and someone will let you in; take elevator to Mezzanine to check in. Real keys--one for front door, one for the room. Comfortable bed. Fridge with separate freezer (no ice tray), single serve coffee maker, microwave and hot water kettle. King room with bath had closet with hangers, iron and ironing board. Hair dryer in dresser drawer. No outlets in bathroom, mirror over desk. Nash Cafe next door open 5pm til late. 2 blocks to Downtown Berkeley BART station, 2 blocks to edge of Cal Berkeley campus. Lots of restaurants, shops and bars nearby. Check for Farmer's Market schedule. Note: parking at Center Street garage is (in September 2026) $25 per day PLUS $25 overnight.

This is great older hotel with character. If you desire sterile chain hotel a 2x the price they are available. I've stayed here 2 times and will go back.
