Tridente is a popular, well-travelled formation of roads in Rome, Italy, whose three streets run south from Piazza del Popolo, together taking the form of a trident at the heart of Rome’s historic centre. It was originally part of a city planning project that reorganised the streets of Rome to centre traffic around prominent churches, beginning from the primary gateway of Porta del Popolo. These churches around Tridente’s roads consist of St. Peter’s Basilica, St. John Lateran, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto.
The streets run beside culturally rich places such as the Pincio Gardens, the Villa Borghese Gardens, the Globe Theatre, Galleria Borghese, the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, the Bioparco Zoo and the antiques markets Borghetto Flaminio and Mercato delle Stampe. Tridente is in the middle of and has some of everything, traditional merry-go-rounds and puppet shows and more, truly representative of both ancient and modern Rome.
