Top neighborhoods in Tangier

Marshan
Marshan is an upscale hillside retreat where elegant villas and diplomatic residences overlook the Atlantic. History buffs will love exploring the ancient Phoenician Tombs carved into clifftop rock and the mystical Hercules Caves where waves crash through natural arches. The Museum of Antiquities showcases impressive Roman mosaics in a former diplomatic villa, while peaceful gardens provide a quiet escape from Tangier's bustle. Refined restaurants in converted mansions serve both Moroccan and international cuisine with spectacular sunset views. Getting around requires taxis or good walking shoes due to the steep terrain, though the panoramic vistas make the climb worthwhile. Luxury riads and boutique hotels in restored villas offer the perfect base for exploring this serene neighborhood.

Medina of Tangier
Lose yourself in Tangier's Medina, where narrow alleys wind between whitewashed walls and blue doorways like a living maze from another century. The bustling souks buzz with leather craftsmen and spice merchants while mint tea steams in copper pots. From the Kasbah's ancient walls, soak in sweeping harbor views before exploring the American Legation Museum's unique slice of history. Traditional riads with interior courtyards offer authentic stays within the medieval walls, where rooftop terraces serve tagine under starlit skies. Forget cars—your feet are your best transportation through these cobblestone passages, though petit taxis wait at the Medina gates when your adventures take you beyond.

Malabata
Malabata's luxurious coastal stretch serves up Mediterranean magic with every sunset. Stroll the scenic waterfront promenades for spectacular views across the Strait of Gibraltar. The pristine beach invites long, lazy afternoons, while the championship Royal Golf Club attracts players from around the world. Villa Harris Gardens and Casino Malabata add cultural flavor to your beach getaway. High-end hotels and resorts dominate the accommodation scene, complete with infinity pools and world-class spas. Fresh seafood and Moroccan-Mediterranean fusion dishes star on restaurant menus throughout the area. Though public transit is limited, hotel shuttles and taxis make the 15-minute journey to central Tangier a breeze.

Iberia
Iberia's whitewashed walls and blue accents whisk you through Tangier's multicultural past with every cobblestone step. This quiet neighborhood trades tourist attractions for authentic charm - winding streets reveal Spanish-influenced architecture, neighbors chatting in doorways, and the occasional corner café serving fragrant tagines. Small squares with traditional fountains offer perfect spots to pause and soak in the hillside views. Local guesthouses and converted riads provide intimate stays with rooftop terraces overlooking the medina. Getting around means walking these steep, narrow passages where daily life unfolds naturally around you. When hunger strikes, family-run eateries serve Moroccan-Spanish fusion dishes at prices that locals pay.

Achakkar
Achakkar's coastline delivers postcard-worthy Atlantic views without tourist crowds. Golden beaches stretch for miles, while the legendary Hercules Caves blend natural wonder with local mythology. The neighborhood balances luxury with breathing room, feeling like a personal slice of Moroccan paradise. Ba Kacem Beach and Sidi Kacem Beach offer quieter alternatives when a change of scenery is needed. Upscale beachfront restaurants serve incredible fresh seafood with sunset views that will make Instagram followers weep. Most visitors stay in luxury resorts or private villas dotting the hillsides. Getting around requires taxis from central Tangier, but the peaceful atmosphere makes the short 20-minute ride completely worthwhile.

Tangier and related destinations
Lose yourself in the labyrinthine Medina, where narrow alleyways reveal bustling souks selling everything from spices to handcrafted leather. The Kasbah offers spectacular views across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain. Mint tea at Café Hafa comes with a side of literary history – Burroughs and Bowles once debated here. Grand Socco square marks the transition between new city and old, while Petit Socco remains the beating heart of the ancient quarter. Cap Spartel lighthouse stands where Mediterranean meets Atlantic. The nearby Hercules Caves combine natural wonder with mythology – locals insist the opening resembles Africa's outline. Dar-el-Makhzen palace showcases Moroccan craftsmanship that makes modern design seem uninspired.

Royal Tulip City Center Tanger
"Excellent hotel. The breakfast wasn’t the best quality, but was included"
Hotel Rembrandt
"This is an older property that requires some updates and renovations (at least in the rooms), although it is decently maintained. Also, the staff is very nice and courteous. We booked a sea view room on Expedia on the arrival date a few hours before check-in. When we arrived, the hotel did not have a sea view room available that most likely was caused by last-minute booking and asynchronization of inventory between Expedia and the property. Meanwhile, the reception personnel provided us with a free parking and waived tourism tax (a total saving of about $10) to compensate us for staying in a Classic city-view room instead of a sea-view room. Breakfast was delicious and offered a lot of meals. There is a nice pool and bar area with music behind the hotel for entertainment. Overall we have enjoyed our one-night stay and can recommend this property for guests visiting Tangier for tourism and other reasons."

"Great location with clean and spacious space"
Kasbah House
"The room was very clean. The breakfast was great and the view from terrace, beautiful. We enjoyed the experience of staying in the Medina. What made the stay great was the staff - kind, accommodating, patient and their hospitality was wonderful. I would not hesitate to recommend and I would stay there again."
Hilton Tangier City Center
"This was my second time here at the hotel and as always the staff were helpful and veryy welcoming. The most comfortable stay. The hotel it self was clean and our rooms were cleaning sooo nicely and we had a nice surprise every time with the cleaner doing something decorative with the curtains or bed. I would definitely come back again and again to this property. All the staff at reception were always smiling happy and welcoming especially Achraf."
Idou Malabata Beach and Spa
"First on our arrival, we were welcomed by gentlemen at the door and directed me to convenient parking, then the concierge helped us check-in in a timely manner with a quick information about the hotel. The room was clean and ready with fruit plate and walnuts, almonds, cookies. Dinner and breakfast were amazing with a professional service. We would like to visit this hotel again."
Kenzi Solazur Hotel
"Parfait"

"The Riad style accommodation gave a sense of splendor and authenticity. The location was convenient being within the Medina and a 20 minute walk to the beach. The staff were warm and helpful and the room was clean and comfortable. However basic in terms of amenities you have to factor in the price. There was a bit of loud building work going on which wasn’t ideal. Overall, would happily stay there again."
