Hotel Aakenus
6/10 Okay
"Very basic hotel, location is great but staff is not friendly at all, esp the blonde lady with glasses. Bed is very hard, thin mattress on divan. Pillow is very flimsy and uncomfortable. Bathroom has a bit of smell from the pipe, soap is terrible so bring your own. Breakfast was acceptable, not the best but at least there are some toast & jam."
"Amazing weekend. Had an amazing view of the Northern Lights due to the hotel being away from the city. The spar was amazing, was a really good weekend"
"The best part about my trip to Finland!! 10/10 stay, I would highly recommend and I hope to make it back here again. The first night offered the most beautiful bright views of the Aurora right from my bed"
"The rooms were spotless and the staff was courteous and always available to answer any questions or concerns. Their restaurant food was also fantastic. "
"I want to start this review by saying that we are NOT hotel snobs. As long as a room is clean, we are happy.
The good stuff – the little red cabin was very cute and very clean. It was sparse and rustic inside but had a dining set and two beds which is exactly what we needed for our one-night stay.
The not-so-good stuff - I was honestly shocked to learn that we were expected to pay €10 PER PERSON for bed sheets and towels. Those are not optional luxuries — they are a fundamental part of any accommodation. They directly affect comfort, hygiene, and sleep quality. Charging extra for something so fundamental felt unreasonable and frankly inappropriate. Bed linens are a basic expectation in any accommodation. Even a budget hostel we stayed at in Helsinki included sheets and towels as standard. We declined to pay the additional fee out of pure principle. As a result, I slept fully clothed, on top of the comforter and under my coat. While I managed, this is not something any guest should have to experience.
Overall, while the cabin itself was charming and clean, the additional charge for bed linens significantly impacted our experience.

"Absolutely fabulous little chalet in stunning setting . Accommodation was beautiful . Such a treat to be able to lay in bed and see the night sky and snowy trees.
An idyllic, cosy, gem for a short break in Finnish Lapland.
Staff were lovely too and the breakfast delivered each day was plentiful and tasty . Would love to return!

"What a great find; such a unique location just outside of town. This is an old forestry school and we appreciated the thoughful nods to its history. The front desk was SO helpful and friendly. Upon checking in, our room was on the 2nd floor. My friend sprained her ankle the day before and I asked if they had an elavator (they dont) but they offered to change our room and move us to the first floor to make it easier. This was such a kind gesture and much appreciated. The rooms were spacious, clean and very comfortable beds!
The lobby is super fun. You can buy snacks and they had some fun trinkets and souvenirs. There were always a few people hanging out watching the Olympics with a beer or coffee. You can get beverages and hot drinks from reception. They also have a bar/lounge area that looked fun.
The restaurant was fabulous. The food was SO good. Definitely make sure to eat at least one meal there! Get the Reindeer Soup. We ate dinner here twice; the first time was out of convenience after travelling all day, the second time out of choice.
We had reserved the barrel sauna and river ice plunge. The owner Mikko, escorted us down to the river and was very helpful in getting the sauna going and chipping away at the ice so we felt comfortable getting up and down the ladder leading into the river.
We loved everything about this place. Having a car was definitely helpful, as it is 15 minutes from Rovaniemi. Thank you for a great stay!"
"The chalet was fabulous, clean and with everything you need. The staff were amazing and having access to lapland winter park was such a great perk. The sledding hill was a favourite of ours. "
