This hotel is a labor of love created by a French speaking couple who saw the potential in a patch of jungle. It's amazing that they designed and built this retreat in just a few years. The rooms are enormous, all with spacious balconies overlooking the jungle.
The owners and staff are very friendly and accommodating. The food is a cut above most hotels. Local foods are available, but the menu features delicious French cuisine. A made-to-order breakfast is included. Lunch and dinner are available. And big bunches of bananas hanging around the restaurant provide free snacks 24/7.
We went to the Barranquero because it was so close to Tayrona National Park. It's a long story, but we were unable to get tickets to the park. The hotel owner tried to pull some strings, but it was impossible. So we spent two and a half days on the hotel grounds, just walking in the jungle, swimming in the river, relaxing on our balcony, and enjoying the food. We loved it.
Travelers should be aware of some drawbacks. There is no hot water, and the towels and toiletries are minimal.
The property is surrounded by rivers. When you first arrive and at checkout, the hotel takes you through the river in a 4-wheel drive. While you're there, you're on your own. You can't leave the property without fording the river.
