Amazing spot. The ryokan is run by a very kind family. The room was very spacious and comfortable, and the mountain views from there were impressive. Also, the dinner was unforgettable and delicious. We wish we could have stayed a bit longer to enjoy the beautiful area.

The staff was so hospitable and made us feel welcome and comfortable. The food was the best we ate in Japan, and cooked with love. The outdoor onsen was heavenly. A visit I will never forget.

A delicious Traditional Japanese Dinner and breakfast were served to us in a private room.

Staff was very helpful in planning my trips each morning, asking where I was planning to go and then helping me find the right bus to take. The night of my arrival as I walked pass the ryokan they called out to me so I would not remain lost.

We had a wonderful 4-day, 3-night stay at Ryokan Sansui and truly enjoyed every moment. The ryokan has a very traditional Japanese atmosphere—an old wooden building full of character, beautifully maintained, clean, and well cared for. It feels authentic and calming, exactly what you hope for in a classic ryokan.
After skiing during the day, the indoor and outdoor onsen were incredibly relaxing. Soaking in the hot spring in the cold winter air was one of the highlights of our trip and the perfect way to unwind each evening.
The ryokan is also very kid-friendly, which we really appreciated while traveling with our toddler. All the staff were exceptionally kind, patient, and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make our child feel comfortable. That warmth made a big difference for us as a family.
We stayed on a half-board plan, and both breakfast and dinner were excellent, with a wide variety of beautifully prepared dishes. Over the course of our stay, we enjoyed Hida beef in different styles, including shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, and nikuyaki—each one delicious and thoughtfully presented.
Overall, Ryokan Sansui offers a perfect blend of traditional charm, comfort, great food, and heartfelt hospitality. It’s an ideal place to relax, especially after outdoor activities, and we would happily return again.

Has potential
Nice location and beautiful surroundings. Ryokan has definitely seen better days and is need of refurbishing. Still staff is friendly and helpful. Meal is traditional so may not be for everyone. The onsens also look dated and can be brighter.

We loved our stay at Ryokan Sansui. The view of the mountains around the hotel were amazing with tri-colored foliage.
The staff were also very lovely and kind. The food was also delicious and more than I had expected. Communication wasn't too easy, but the message would get across.
The best part was, of course, the onsen (hot spring) experience. They offer both public (gender-separated) hot springs and baths, as well as 4 private ones that don't need prior booking or extra fees.
Getting there and back took a lot of time though, so our 1-day trip seemed a bit too short.

The service and attention to details were top notch. The owner/manager was very helpful and with his help we were able to go to Kamikochi by public transportation even though it was closed. We really wanted to do this so his help was much appreciated. We did not have breakfast but the dinner was very good and served by these nice attentive ladies which we really enjoyed. The ryokan is more traditional which worked for us in the remote mountains. The view from the spacious lobby area was very pretty.

Interesting stay
The hosts are very kind and considerate and we had a nice stay in a traditional Japanese style room with very authentic Japanese meals for dinner and breakfast. The hotel is perhaps a little dated but it added to the charm and it is very clean. We didn’t get to try the outdoor onsen as we had hoped as we were put off but a large spider other guests alerted us to. Nevertheless we enjoyed our stay.

Lovely Owner/Manager!
Off the beaten path, and probably best suited with a car (which we rented), but also accessible by bus/taxi. Owner/Manager was SUPER nice and helpful. Breakfast and dinner were unique and tasty, and reasonably priced. Very close to Kamikochi, and a few dining options nearby by car (and possibly an itzakaya across the street...if the owner is not napping 😆). 3 lovely private onsens on-site, too, plus 2 public for M and F. Nice alternative to western hotels with tatami mats and a lovely view of the mountains.

We felt very taken care of. The property has not seen renovations since the early 70s, I suspect. It actually adds to the charm of the place.

The hotel is easy to get to from Matsumoto by bus on a very scenic ride. We were collected by the hotel manager from the bus stop. This is a very sleepy village, though we ate at two very good restaurants. The hotel has seen better days (not really a Ryokan). However two major highlghts: were their evening meal which was was brilliant, incredible course after course in a private dining room. Equally, the experience of sitting in their hot pool looking at the mountains was very memorable. Catching the bus down to Takayama was easy at the end of our stay.

This was a delightful surprise. It is a 40-min bus or taxi ride up from Takamaya and is well worth the trip out and back. We stayed longer here than most other hotels.
We will remember this one for its charm, the kindness and cooking skills of the owner and family, and the nearby ryokans that provide the best lunches, Cafe mokkamokka, and Ryoken Tonoyashi (sp ?)- the Sansui people will tell you which one. This dinner spot provided the most delicious simple and AMPLE dinners for much less than we spent elsewhere on our 3-week trip. Definitely, we'll come back.
The walks into and around the mountains were breathtaking. We made sure to do a pre-lunch and pre-dinner walk up and down a short span of the main road.
As a ryoken, the usual pajamas provided by hotels the Sansui provided were a full kimono and jacket suitable for men and women. We wore these to the one dinner we had at Sansui - private dining room, and it was a hoot. The food was amazing, and highly traditional consisting of about a dozen small plates and 4-5 larger plates. Great value for excellent and abundant servings.
The mountains at the start of spring are beautiful. We picked a good time.
This is a retro 60s ryoken. So know that as such it has everything, including a throwback to ski resorts of that era, but misses slightly on wifi only in the lobby. Still, we met other friendly travelers all cranking into wifi and telling stories.

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, which made us feel the ultimate Japanese hospitality. We had dinner alone in a room and then breakfast alone in another room. Though there are other guests, we really felt we had the hotel facility including onsen for our own. The guests can also use private onsen room for free without reservations. The mountain View from the outdoor onsen was really beautiful. The location of the hotel, Fukuji onsen, is really quiet. It’s also quite central if you plan to visit all 5 onsen towns of Okuhida Onsengo.
