2/10 Mediocre

No one there to check us in. Door was locked. 2 hours later someone had to come in on day off for us to finally get checked in, WiFi did not work, hot water not working and heat ran regardless of thermostat setting. Overall would never stay here again. Morgan, who finally came in on her day off was wonderful, but that was the only thing good about this stay.

Cool 19th century hotel, right in the middle of town. Walk everywhere. The only complaint I had was the beds. They sag in the middle, which isn't a problem if you're alone. They should probably be platform beds. The hotel was retrofitted with en suite bathrooms, obviously. But everything works! Parking on the street right out front was no problem. Very secure and really pretty.

Check-in was smooth. The restaurant was closed the first two days of our visit which was part of why we booked there. The breakfast in "bed and breakfast" was a very scaled down continental breakfast - one type of danish, coffee, tea, fruit, dry cereal. Duration was 1 hour. One morning, the staff was not there on time and a line of guests outside the door had formed. The coffee hadn't been emptied from the night before and no food was out. When staff arrived, they started the coffee which overflowed because they hadn't emptied the pot first. I think the owners should consider a better breakfast option or change their claim that it's a bed and breakfast hotel. Also, if you book, don't ask for Room 10, it is front and center of the lobby, right inside the front door to the hotel - so lots of noise until late at night when other guests return to their room, and early as folks check out. What was amazing was the en suite sauna/steam bath and shower, and comfortable bed/bedding. Front desk staff were also courteous and helpful.

It is difficult to give stars to an inconsistent experience. The woman who made the breakfast and cleaned the rooms was very nice and customer focused. This hotel needs some attention in the sense that your average traveler expects more. Things that need attention are: making sure that there is coffee before 8:00 and assuring that the coffee in the breakfast room has been delivered. The gal making the breakfast could only apologize that the supplies were not delivered. I happened to wander around the main floor at 7:30 and discovered a Keurig in a back room by the ice machine. The back room needed attention. The breakfast each morning was a warm sweet pastry, white toast, and cold cereal. I heard several patrons ask about eggs and other typical breakfast offerings. This is a problem for travelers paying the price to stay here. Room # 7 had 2 queen beds which we needed and were adequate. The bathroom, had a shower that was so tight and there was not a shelf to place shampoo etc., except the floor. I talked to one of the new mgmt. team and expressed my observations. While it is an old hotel with lots of charm it is in need of some upgrading. My conversation with the mgmt. team person was cordial and he let me know of some of the minor upgrades they were thinking about. I believe that you can keep the ambiance of a historic hotel with more welcoming upgrades.

The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was very small with a short toilet. The sink in the room was also small, so no place to put toiletries. I would not recommend for anyone who has trouble with stairs.

The historic nature of the St. Elmo is awesome, and the room and staff were great. Only disappointment was “continental breakfast”. If the usual pastries had been present, I would have been fine, but the yogurt parfait and fruit was not something I can stomach in the morning. Found an affordable option at Cassidy’s, 2 doors down. St. Elmo’s did have coffee available.

Hotel quality dropped significantly

Terrible customer service from the front desk lady. Extremely rude and unprofessional. Additionally, there was no real breakfast offered. Just cold bread and cold sweet pastries. The new management team is very deficient. Trying to cut corners everywhere they can.

Horrible room

No air conditioning terribly hot tiny room. Opened windows at night they had no screens so insects were a problem. Also on first floor we didn’t feel safe. Old pillow and blankets. No outlets uncomfortable bed. Terrible nights sleep
