Roughly 8 km (5 miles) northwest of Ukulhas, the serene waters of Maaya Thila hide a world full of colour and teeming with life. Scuba diving in this area is best from December to May because that’s when the seas are at their calmest and it’s suitable for divers of all ability levels, even beginners.
While you swim under the surface, you’ll find a host of marine life, including clownfish, nudibranchs, butterflyfish and the shimmering parrotfish. You’ll also find whitetip and grey reef sharks if you go further down.

The name of Hammerhead Point, Rasdhoo Atoll, Fuvahmulah diving point gives a clue to its main attraction: the chance to see hammerhead sharks. But sharks aren’t the only wildlife to be seen around Rasdhoo Atoll. From November to April, you’ll find manta rays wending their way beneath the waves.

Alimatha Jetty, Male Atoll is known for its amazing night dives. Discover the secret nighttime world of the Indian Ocean and witness, firsthand, what happens underwater after dark. With a maximum depth of 15 metres (49 ft), it’s not a difficult dive, though the currents can be stronger than in other areas, so be aware. Diving in Alimatha is breathtaking both at night and in the day.

To the north of the Maldives, you’ll find the Filladhoo Wreck, in the Haa Alifu Atoll. Descend 30 metres (98 ft) to see the blue, pink and green coral growing around this shipwreck and the fish swimming through the holes in the metal hull. The rusting boat, reclaimed by nature, conjures thoughts of adventure on the high seas and is sure to leave you with treasured memories.

Ukulhas Thila is one of the places where you can get up close and personal with the manta rays that love these warm ocean waters. The shallower part of this site is a cleaning station for these huge creatures, so they are frequent visitors.

Experienced divers will want to head over to Kudah Rah Thila, where marine life swarms in the ocean currents up to 40 metres (131 ft) below. Beginners should stick to calmer waters such as Mushimasmigili, also known as Fish Head, where reef sharks, turtles and smaller fish all gather. With many more places to dive as well, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

The Haa Alifu channels are an excellent starting place for novice divers. Shallow and with minimal currents, swimming here is easier than in some of the other, deeper diving spots in the Maldives.
Just because it’s less difficult, doesn’t make it less worth diving. Within the channels you’ll find myriad brightly coloured fish, including clownfish and bluestripe snappers, and the curious albino moray eels. And all of this, in the tropical paradise of the Maldives, it would be hard to find a better place for an introduction to scuba diving.
